Obituary

Evelyn Blanche Smoot
(February 16, 1916 - May 31, 2010)

In the early hours of morning on May 31, 2010, Evelyn Blanche Smoot, 94, of Huntington, WV, passed very peacefully from this world to take her place in Heaven. She spent her last day in a beautiful room at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, which overlooked the mighty Ohio River or "my river" as she used to call it. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the First Church of the Nazarene Huntington, of which she was a member for almost 50 years, with Dallas Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville, Ohio, with grandsons serving as pallbearers. She was born February 16, 1916, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Eugene and Pearl Childers Baumgardner. Her husband and best friend Dwight E. Smoot also preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters and loving sons-in-law, Marjorie and Charles Collins of Huntington, and Sharon and Alfred "Hap" Perry of Mannington, SC.; two sons and very special daughters-in-law, Richard "Dick" and Penny Smoot, and Cary and Jackie Smoot all of Huntington; 14 grandchildren, Frank Collins, Richie Collins, Deborah Meadows, Phillip Collins, Kathy Weir, Rick Smoot, Jennifer White, Susan Pinkerman, Mark Smoot, Casey Perry, Andrea Scardina, Pete Perry, Erica Clark, and Greg Perry. She was also blessed with 23 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She taught her children and grandchildren a love of family and bestowed upon them a rich spiritual heritage. She made beautiful quilts, and gave at least one to each of her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook wonderful foods and desserts, play cards, fish, and most of all spend time with her family. Her prayers lifted up to Heaven daily on behalf of her whole family, and everyone who visited her house noticed how the Lord's sweet peace filled her home. All who love her, by those who called her Mother and those who called her Gran will dearly miss her. Friends may call at Chapman's Mortuary Friday, June 4, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, and after noon at the church Saturday. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, 3100 Staunton Road Huntington, WV 25702.
