Dorothy Lorena Sydenstricker Terry
(March 14, 1923 - October 18, 2013)

Dorothy Lorena (Sydenstricker) Terry departed this country and took her heavenly flight from her West Virginia home surrounded by her family on Friday, October 18, 2013. Dorothy was born in Logan County on March 14, 1923 to Clarence and Lily Harrison Sydenstricker. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Alex Hartsel Terry, parents, infant sister Opal Sydenstricker, granddaughter Angie Terry, daughter-in-law who was like a daughter, Sarah Terry, and grand daughter-in-law, Denise Terry. She leaves behind eight children, who adore her and call her blessed, Rev. Thomas Terry, Barboursville, WV; Richard (Linda) Terry, Huntington, WV; Shirley (Jerry) Blake, Barboursville, WV; Dottie (Roland) Richards, Holiday, FL; Hartsel Ray “Gibb” Terry, Weeki Wachee, FL and Huntington, WV; Rev. John (Karen) Terry, Branford, FL; Roberta (Hobert) Richards, New Port Richey, FL; Robert Terry, Huntington, WV; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. As the oldest sister, Dorothy leaves behind three treasured siblings, Ruth (Joe) Morehouse of Lesage, WV, John-Claude Sydenstricker of Lesage, and Kenny (Joyce) Sydenstricker of Villa Rica, GA; a special sister-in-law, Mabel Terry of Lincoln County, WV; and a host of cherished nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a devoted member to both Park Circle Free Will Baptist Church in Kenova, WV where she was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary and Crossroads Chapel, Palm Harbor, FL where she was elected Mother of the Year. Dorothy was homemaker for many years prior to entering the workforce. She retired from three positions working in the Cigar Factory in Huntington, WV; as a cook for Cabell County Schools 16 years; and as a CNA/Home Health Aide certified through American Red Cross, FL. She was instrumental in the development of the Head Start program for Cabell County. She was an avid reader, members of both Lincoln and Cabell County Reading Councils, and the WV and International Reading Associations. She penned numerous poems and stories to the delight of her generations; two of which were published in the Herald-Dispatch, Huntington, WV. Dorothy and her husband loved to entertain and insisted you never leave their home hungry or without prayer. She loved her country and enjoyed many adventures via all modes of transportation - air, land, and sea. She enjoyed numerous cruises especially three cruises with son and primary care giver, Hartsel Ray, who always tried to include her pets on their journeys. Throughout life, especially during her recent battle with cancer, her favorite scriptures were Philippians 4:13 and 19, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me and … my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” The family would graciously like to thank their Heavenly Father; the staff of St. Mary’s Medical Center, HIMG, Rose Terrace of Culloden, WV and Hospice of Huntington; Dr. Dewayne Tackett; and the numerous churches and Christian friends for their prayers and support across the USA.  may call from noon to 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with a service at 1:00 PM with Rev. Randy Jeffers officiating. Soloist will be Debbie Shaffer. Grandsons will service as pallbearers. Following the service at the funeral home, a short service will be held on the steps of Susie Chapel Holiness Church, the place where she and her husband raised their family and interment will follow at Susie Chapel cemetery. A celebration of life will be held following interment at the Gethsemane United Baptist Fellowship Hall in Barboursville, WV hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of Park Circle FWB and Gethsemane UB. Her children would like to extend an invitation to all who loved their mother.
