Dorothy Lorena (Sydenstricker) Terry
departed this country and took her heavenly flight from her West Virginia
home surrounded by her family on Friday, October 18, 2013. Dorothy was born
in Logan County on March 14, 1923 to Clarence and Lily Harrison
Sydenstricker. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years,
Alex Hartsel Terry, parents, infant sister Opal Sydenstricker, granddaughter
Angie Terry, daughter-in-law who was like a daughter, Sarah Terry, and grand
daughter-in-law, Denise Terry. She leaves behind eight children, who adore
her and call her blessed, Rev. Thomas Terry, Barboursville, WV; Richard
(Linda) Terry, Huntington, WV; Shirley (Jerry) Blake, Barboursville, WV;
Dottie (Roland) Richards, Holiday, FL; Hartsel Ray “Gibb” Terry, Weeki
Wachee, FL and Huntington, WV; Rev. John (Karen) Terry, Branford, FL;
Roberta (Hobert) Richards, New Port Richey, FL; Robert Terry, Huntington,
WV; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great
grandchildren. As the oldest sister, Dorothy leaves behind three treasured
siblings, Ruth (Joe) Morehouse of Lesage, WV, John-Claude Sydenstricker of
Lesage, and Kenny (Joyce) Sydenstricker of Villa Rica, GA; a special
sister-in-law, Mabel Terry of Lincoln County, WV; and a host of cherished
nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a devoted member to both Park Circle Free
Will Baptist Church in Kenova, WV where she was a charter member of the
Ladies Auxiliary and Crossroads Chapel, Palm Harbor, FL where she was
elected Mother of the Year. Dorothy was homemaker for many years prior to
entering the workforce. She retired from three positions working in the
Cigar Factory in Huntington, WV; as a cook for Cabell County Schools 16
years; and as a CNA/Home Health Aide certified through American Red Cross,
FL. She was instrumental in the development of the Head Start program for
Cabell County. She was an avid reader, members of both Lincoln and Cabell
County Reading Councils, and the WV and International Reading Associations.
She penned numerous poems and stories to the delight of her generations; two
of which were published in the Herald-Dispatch, Huntington, WV. Dorothy and
her husband loved to entertain and insisted you never leave their home
hungry or without prayer. She loved her country and enjoyed many adventures
via all modes of transportation - air, land, and sea. She enjoyed numerous
cruises especially three cruises with son and primary care giver, Hartsel
Ray, who always tried to include her pets on their journeys. Throughout
life, especially during her recent battle with cancer, her favorite
scriptures were Philippians 4:13 and 19, “I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me and … my God shall supply all your need according to his
riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” The family would graciously like to thank
their Heavenly Father; the staff of St. Mary’s Medical Center, HIMG, Rose
Terrace of Culloden, WV and Hospice of Huntington; Dr. Dewayne Tackett; and
the numerous churches and Christian friends for their prayers and support
across the USA. may call from noon to 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 20,
2013, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with a service at 1:00 PM with Rev.
Randy Jeffers officiating. Soloist will be Debbie Shaffer. Grandsons will
service as pallbearers. Following the service at the funeral home, a short
service will be held on the steps of Susie Chapel Holiness Church, the place
where she and her husband raised their family and interment will follow at
Susie Chapel cemetery. A celebration of life will be held following
interment at the Gethsemane United Baptist Fellowship Hall in Barboursville,
WV hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of Park Circle FWB and Gethsemane UB. Her
children would like to extend an invitation to all who loved their mother.
