Obituary

John Paul Hockenberry
(March 31, 1948 - April 25, 2018)

On April 25, 2018, John Paul Hockenberry left his temporary home and entered his eternal home and was greeted by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Paul was born on March 31, 1949, to the late Rev. John Hockenberry and Mary Reed Hockenberry. He leaves behind his best friend and soul mate, Sharon Cummings Hockenberry, wife of nearly 50 years. Paul had two sons and daughters-in-law, John Paul (JP) Jr., wife Kelly, and Gregory Charles, wife Julie. He adored his four grandchildren Ian, Haylie, Noah and Elliot. He leaves behind one sister, Mary Joan Gue, her husband Gene, and two nephews, special aunt Luella Turvey and numerous cousins. Paul was retired from Local 80 Insulators Union. He served 6 years in the Army reserves. He served on Barboursville City Council and Park Board for twenty years. His passion and calling was serving his community through the Barboursville Vol. Fire Dept. for 42 years and where he shed his blood, sweat and tears for the people of Cabell County and loved every minute of it. Paul was former fire chief and was one of the first EMT's in the county. He will be remembered as "Pops", leader, mentor to so many but most of all he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Steele Memorial United Methodist Church or Barboursville Volunteer Fire Dept. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2018 at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, by Rev. Kevin Lantz and Pastor Jason Salmons. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday at the church.
