David Alan Stephenson, Sr.
(January 7, 1948 - October 22, 2009)



DAVID ALAN STEPHENSON, SR
61, born January 7, 1948 died October 22, 2009. Preceded in death by his mother Lois Glenn Robbins Stephenson and his beloved Border Collie "Tippy." He was born in Bellepoint, WV (now Hinton) to Lois and Harvey Thorn Stephenson. His father worked with the Corp of Engineers on the Blue Stone Dam as a Civil Engineer. The family moved three months later to Huntington, where his father continued his work with the Corp on the Huntington Flood Wall system.
David graduated from Huntington East High School. Marrying soon after high school he had two sons, David Alan, Jr. & Adam Michael Stephenson. During this time he joined the US Naval Reserves and served a tour of duty in Viet Nam on the USS Blandy. Upon returning from the military he attended and graduated from The Huntington Business College and soon started working for the Cabell County Courthouse. David first worked in the Circuit Clerks Office and later moved to the Personal Property Tax Office. He deeply enjoyed serving the public and valued the friendships developed over the years with his co-workers and the public.
He was a HAMM operator with the call letters "KB8FIW" and enjoyed talking with his father weekly through the years on the HAMM Radio.
He was a member of the Steele Memorial United Methodist Singles and More Sunday School Class in Barboursville, WV and served as their Choir Director for many years up until the time of his death. He treasured the close friendship that developed with so many of the class members.
He met his girlfriend, Denise Eagan through the Single Point Ministry at First United Methodist in Huntington, WV where he served as Executive Director of the ministry for several years. He found great joy in serving and helping others.
David is survived by his father, Harvey (who turned 100 years old this year) from Kimberling City, Mo., brother Don from California and his two sons David (Lisa) Stephenson from Brooksville, KY and Adam (Shawnda) Stephenson from Huntington and grandchildren Chad, Chelsea, Jaz, Talina and Kovyn Stephenson. Also surviving is girlfriend Denise Eagan and her sons Sean (Lisa) Eagan from Jacksonville, Fl and Sgt. Christopher (Jennifer) Eagan from El Paso, TX and grandchildren Kayla, Cody, Mackenna, Jocelyn and Sophie Eagan. In addition David leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews & cousins, special friends Cindy and Kevin Ballengee, & the mother of his two sons Sandra Harrison.
David was a wonderful, caring father and friend to all who met him. He was a loyal and giving gift to all of us from God. His love for the Lord was always his first and most important focus. He carried such a deep desire to extend God's love to all those he met throughout the day. We his family and friends will deeply miss him always and never stop loving him.
A celebration of his life in a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday October 31, 2009, at 1pm at Steele Memorial United Methodist Church. Family members and loved ones will meet at the church at 11am to receive guests prior to the service. Burial will be held immediately after the service at Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington, WV.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and the Singles and More Sunday School Class for their love, prayers and support during his illness. We also thank his co-workers at the Cabell County Courthouse, their caring and support brought David much comfort. And many thanks to St. Mary's Hospital Oncology Unit and The Hospice House of Huntington for all of their care and loving kindness during David's stay.
