Obituary

Rudolph "Rudy" Pennington
(May 4, 1928 - December 28, 2009)

Rudolph "Rudy" Pennington, 81, of Huntington passed away from this life and entered his eternal life in Heaven with his Savior Jesus Christ on December 28, 2009. He was born May 4, 1928 to Madge and Hawley Pennington who preceded him in death as did his sister Iris Schoenlein. Rudy is survived by his wife Betty of 62 years and their daughters Sherry Shumaker of Huntington and Barbara P. Gibson and her husband Jim of Nashville, TN. Also surviving is his brother Don Pennington of Detroit, grandson Charley Shumaker III his wife Kari and their children Allen and Megan, granddaughter Elizabeth (Shumaker) Hensley her husband Mike and their daughter Annabella.
Rudy graduated from Huntington East High School in 1946 and shortly thereafter served three years in the United States Army-Air Force. Rudy's incredible athletic ability proved to serve him well as he played baseball for the International Nickel baseball team which ultimately led to his 38 year career with the company. During his tenure with the company he worked in many capacities eventually making his way up to Maintenance Planning Foreman, the position from which he retired.
Filled with a passion for the Lord, Rudy made it a staple in his life to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ on a daily basis, setting an example for others that reached much farther than he would ever know. He was a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, a former Sunday school leader and lay preacher who loved the Lord with all of his heart as he served in a wide array of ministries over the years. Those who knew him best will certainly miss his ever-present smile and his sense of humor that only those who understood a "Rudy joke" could laugh about. While his family and friends will miss him dearly, we are comforted in the knowledge that he is finally at home.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lewis Memorial Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Thursday December 31 at 2:00 pm at Chapman's Mortuary. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
