Obituary

Rev. Eddie Lyle Marcum
 (March 16, 1929 - May 17, 2013)

Rev. Lyle Marcum, 84, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Cabell Huntington Hospital. Born March 16, 1929 at Puritan, WV, he was the son of the late Wallace Marcum of Kermit, WV & Herma Marcum of Huntington, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Hill Marcum; four brothers: Leslie, Welby, Wirt, Wallace (Wad); two sisters: Mabel Hunter and Joan Queen; and a half-brother, Orville. After graduating from Burch High School, Lyle was employed at Kiser Aluminum. He later focused his life on pastoring the Hubbell Church of God. He attended the annual General Assembly for the Church of God Association and enjoyed a trip to the Holy Land. Lyle was also a long-time member of the Tenth Avenue Church of God in Huntington. Lyle spent many years assisting his brother, Wirt and nephew Gary Wirt Marcum in overseeing their grocery businesses at Taylorville and Matewan, WV. He and his wife Phyllis served as assistant directors for Red Man FLW where they orchestrated professional fishing tournaments. They traveled the northern states from Virginia to Vermont. He also participated in Anglers for Christ, a church service conducted prior to each tournament. Lyle was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing with his nephews and friends. He looked forward to fishing and being in the company of his nephew, Mike. They recently spent a day together fishing at Yatesville Lake. Lyle opened his home to so many people over the years, helping care for his mother, wife, sister and a host of family members. As Lisa, Regina and David relocated from Delbarton, he invited them to live with him during their transition to Huntington and treated them as his own children. His legacy was caring and serving others in the name of Jesus Christ. He believed in giving more than he received. Whether it was baking hams and cakes for family reunions or sharing produce from his garden, he gave with love and compassion. Lyle’s family Bible is filled with his handwritten notes about scripture. He loved to spend time in the word of God and serving the Lord, which was taught to him early in life by his Christian mother. He is survived by his nieces and nephews of whom he loved as sons and daughters: Mike (Annette) Marcum of Taylorville; Byron (Patricia) Marcum of Pie; Sharon (Bill) Shannon of Taylorville; Lisa and Regina Marcum of Huntington; David Marcum of Proctorville, OH; Cheryl (Larry) Moore of Tennessee; Brenda (Gary) Runyon of Tennessee; Eddie Queen of Charleston; Larry (Dreama) Queen of OH; Roy Glenn (Merriam) Marcum of Huntington; half-brother, Dwight Marcum of Kermit; and a host of family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 and a Celebration of Life will be at 7 p.m. at the Reger Funeral Home and Chapel, with the Reverends Leon Garner, Paul Ray Farley, Darrell Buttram and Will Compton officiating. A graveside tribute will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23 at the Marcum Cemetery, Pie, WV.
