Obituary



Arvil Vincent (A.V.) Dodrill, Jr., 89, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017, at The Wyngate, in Barboursville. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Thursday, June 22, 2017, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Bob Hogsett officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be George Smailes, Jr., Willard Hunter, Don Moreland, Mel Graham, Tim Casey, Richard Smailes, Steve Williams, Watson Jones, and Evan Jenkins. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Huntington. He was born October 12, 1927 in Morgantown, WV, a son of the late Arvil Vincent Dodrill, Sr. and Georgia Deskins Dodrill. A.V. was a graduate of West Virginia University and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He served for six years in the WV State Police in South Charleston and three years as Deputy Warden at the State Penitentiary in Moundsville. He also served as a United States Probation and Parole Officer in the Southern District of West Virginia for 24 years, 13 as Chief, and then as State Commissioner of Corrections for WV under Gov. Arch Moore for four years. He spent his spare time working for Little League baseball at League Five and Buddy Basketball at the Huntington Y.M.C.A. as well as several years as a Director for the Mountaineer Athletic Club. He was a member of the Beverly Hills United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn S. Dodrill. Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Jennifer Dodrill of Homosassa, FL and T. Kirk and Lisa Dodrill of Huntington; four grandchildren and their spouses, Eric B. (Dr. Melissa) Dodrill of Bridgeport. WV, Miranda (Shinya) Turley of Huntington, A. Paige Dodrill of Charlotte, NC and T. Kane Dodrill of Huntington; and two great grandchildren, Callen Elliott Dodrill and Bryant Oliver Dodrill and a very Special friend Hallie Talbot of Charleston, WV. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at the funeral home.
