Obituary



John William Lemley, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017, in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Funeral services will be conducted 12:00pm Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Chapman's Mortuary, with Rev. Patrick Ryan officiating. Burial will be in in Spring Hill Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard Post 16, Huntington, WV. John was born July 11, 1946, in Huntington, WV, a son of the late John Huffman Lemley and Merle Fischer Lemley. He graduated from Huntington East High School and Marshall University with an education degree. He also served 4 years in the U S Air Force, and was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. John taught special education and driver's education at Fairland High School for many years where he also coached baseball, football and was athletic director. He also taught at Ironton High School where he was proud to be an assistant football coach and baseball coach for the Ironton Fighting Tigers. John played, coached, and loved many sports, but his great passion was baseball. He had an ongoing love/hate relationship with the Cincinnati Reds, Washington Redskins and Marshall University football. John is survived by his wife of 30 years, Renee Brownfield Lemley as well as 4 children and 6 grandchildren. His children are Jason Lemley and wife Kathleen, their children Grace, Aubrey, Charlotte and Laine all of Springfield, VA., Matthew Lemley and wife Amy, their children Olivia and Noah all of Louisville, KY., Alexandra Lemley and husband, Sam Welsh of Washington, DC, and Nicholas Lemley and wife Sarah of Huntington. John is also survived by his brother Jimmy Lemley and wife Becky; his mother and father-in-law, Donna and John Thomas; sister and brother-in-law, Sallye Pace and Jeff Legge; and brother-in-law, Brett Brownfield. He is also survived by his aunt, Joann Hynus, Uncle Charles Lemley, nephews Scott and Brian Lemley, as well as many cousins. Also many dear friends who were ever present and faithful to him during his long battle with cancer. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Matias Valsecchi and the staff of HIMG Oncology Department who provided such loving care and compassion during John's hard-fought battle. John never met a stranger, dominated every room he entered, and was the master of the art of conversation. Above all things, he treasured and loved each of his children and grandchildren. He never missed a practice, game, show or ceremony. We will miss you forever and always, our dad and Opa. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith". Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
