Walter Brown, Jr.
(June 11, 1925 - January 21, 2014)



Walter Brown, Jr., 88, of Huntington, widower of Iva E. Brown, passed away Tuesday January 21, 2014 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm Friday at the New Beginning Apostolic Church by Pastor T.D. Mills and Bishop Norman Mills. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born June 11, 1925 in Cabell County, WV a son of the late Walter Brown, Sr. and Carrie Cliff Brown. He was a retired employee of Houdaille Industries. Walter was a US Navy Veteran having served for 3 ½ years in the Pacific Theater with the 3rd and 5th Fleets during WWII. He was a member of the US Navy Reserve and was a life member of the DAV. Walter was a Huntington Police Reserve Officer and a Kentucky Colonel. He was also a member of New Beginning Apostolic Church, formerly the 25th St. Pentecostal Church. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Linda Smithey and three sisters Mary Brown, Nellie Abrahams and Grace Gosney. Survivors include two sons and daughters in law Rev. Walter Benjamin "Bennie" Brown and his wife Sheryl Brown and Jobe Frederick and Susan Brown all of Huntington; daughter Deborah Kay Olivarez and her husband Ernest of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; son in law John C. Smithey of Conway, SC; grandchildren Rachel Strickland, Jennifer Hardin, Johnathon Smithey, Christel Holley, Karen Donahue, Philip Olivarez, Benjamin A. Brown, Michele Brown, Jessica Brown and Chelsea Brown; 18 great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; brother Robert G. Brown of Hampton, VA and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend special appreciation to his caregiver Beth Adkins and to his granddaughter Michele and great grandson Kurtlen for the 5 years they lived with their grandfather and took care of him so he could remain in his home. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the New Beginning Apostolic Church. Graveside military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 93 of Kenova, WV. Reger Funeral Home is assisting the family.
