Joseph T. Schafer
(January 4, 1928 - January 13, 2014)



Joseph T. Schafer, 86, of Kenova, WV, passed away Monday morning, January 13, 2014 at River’s Bend Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Pastor Bill Osborn and Pastor Charles O. Adkins. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Huntington. He was born January 4, 1928 in Huntington, WV, a son of the late George Joseph and Cora Matthews Schafer. Joseph was a veteran of the US Army having joined in 1945 and served with the First Cavalry Division. He was a Foreman with Columbia Gas Transmission having retired in 1985 after 36 years of service and was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Wayne, WV. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter Karen Sue Ball and two sisters Eva Clark and Dorothy Christian and two brothers Charles and James Schafer. Survivors include the love of his life and his wife of 58 years Marcetis (Robinson) Schafer; three sons and two daughters in law Keith Schafer and his fiancé Laura Davenport, Kyle and Pam Schafer and Kevin and Michele Schafer; eight grandchildren Kim Fortner, Andy, Erin, Adam, Chris, Corey, Cole and Anna Schafer; two great grandchildren Isaac Fortner and Jocelyn Schafer; son in law Shirley Ball and daughter in law Teresa Schafer. The family would like to thank their wonderful neighbors on Buffalo Creek, the VA Home Health Care, VA Medical Staff, River’s Bend Health Care, Hospice of Huntington and all who helped in his care. Friends may call from 5 to 8 pm Wednesday at the Reger Funeral Home.
