Obituary
Clarissa
H. Carson
(September 28, 1930 - July 21, 2013)
Clarissa Ann Harless Carson
was reunited with her late husband James Richard Carson on July 21, 2013,
after a brief illness. Clarissa was born Sept. 28, 1930, the youngest child
of Howard H. Harless and Harriet Ann Wallace Harless, who preceded her in
death. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Iva Mildred Gill and
Betty Jean Alexander, and two brothers, Wallace Reid Harless and Paul
Summers Harless. Mary Ethel Spurlock is her surviving beloved sister. Also
surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Richard Stephen and Linda Anne
Carson; son Paul Kelly Carson; daughter Joanna Jean (Jodi) Carson; and
daughter and son-in-law, Jill Harriet and Samuel Mark Shaffer. Additional
survivors include granddaughter Jenny Linn Beckelhymer; grandsons Joseph
Paul Carson (Jeannine and Zoe), Christopher Todd Carson, Samuel Carson
Shaffer and Jacob Riley Shaffer; great-grandson Carson Reese Beckelhymer;
brother-in-law Vernon Alexander; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Clarissa was a former employee of the McKesson Drug Co. and a former
secretary for Pea Ridge and Highlawn United Methodist churches, but first
and foremost she was a wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church of Huntington and a former member and choir
member at Cross Roads and Southside United Methodist churches. She was an
avid traveler, having organized, directed and orchestrated a series of
vacations from Maine to California and Texas to Canada for a family of six
in a station wagon and tent camper. Amazingly she was still willing to
accompany her husband in later years to Great Britain, Europe, the Middle
East, Egypt, Australia and the Canadian Rockies among other destinations.
Clarissa was a popular partner in many bridge clubs in Huntington and
Barboursville, and was the favorite cook in her “Scattered Flock”, which
included Brenda Patton, Cynthia Beal, Ann Tebbetts, Janet Grimes and Leah
O’Rourke. She will also be missed by special friends Lois Hamrick, Rose
Zella Morris, Alma Edwards and Kay Bunn, and all of her neighbors at the
Woodlands Retirement Community. Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the
Chapman’s Mortuary chapel, with the Rev. Chris Wood and the Rev. Mark Connor
officiating. Visitation will begin at noon in the chapel. Pallbearers will
be her four grandsons, nephew David Dwight Messinger Jr., and family friends
H.O. (Jack) Morris, Grover L. Hamrick and Dr. James Butler. Entombment will
follow in Woodmere Memorial Park Abbey of Remembrance, South Garden of
Faith, Huntington. Chapman’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu
of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington.
