Obituary
Rachel Susan Carter Payne was born on August 27, 1924 in Milton, WV to loving parents Michael Edward and Annie Carter. She attended school in Milton and then the family moved on to Huntington after her father's death in 1932. Rachel was one of five children: two brothers James Patrick Carter of Kenova and John Frederick Carter of Chesapeake, Ohio and two sisters, Effie Butler and Ruth Johnson both of Huntington, all of whom preceded her in death. Two nephews, Joseph Carter of Chesapeake and Sherrill Eugene Butler of Kernersville, North Carolina, also preceded her in death. Rachel also lost two children: Robert Carter Payne in 2006 and Jan Susan Payne in 1961 at the age of four years old. Little Jan was injured at birth and Rachel faithfully and courageously took care of her throughout her life without complaint and with the utmost care and absolute dedication. In 1970, she became employed by Huntington State Hospital as a switchboard operator. She loved the work there and the fellowship and friendship with the other employees. All her life, Rachel loved little children. On March 20, 2018, a few months before her death, Rachel gained her first great grandchild, Jaxson Carter Payne of Charlotte, North Carolina. She is survived by many who loved her and who will treasure her memory: daughter Karen Cadwell and granddaughter Kristen Webb (Mark) both of Huntington, grandsons Douglas M. Payne (Alex) and son, Jaxson of Charlotte, Logan B. Payne of Hurricane WV, daughters-in-law Kimberly Hagley of Charlotte and Randi Payne of Hurricane, sister-in-law Patricia Carter of Chesapeake and many special nieces and nephews. Rachel was a devout Christian with deeply held beliefs. She was baptized into Christ on May 10, 1962 and knew Him as her Savior. The family especially wanted to thank these wonderful Hospice care workers: Jennifer, Alicia, Martha, Willa, Cindy, Steve and Tim whose help and guidance was so appreciated during our time of great sorrow. Services will be held at White Chapel Mausoleum 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 31, 2018, with Rev. Ken Toler officiating.
