Obituary

Charles Howard Newman
(November 7, 1942 - December 17, 2012)

Charles Howard Newman 70, of Kenova, WV, passed away Monday, December 17, 2012, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Friday, December 21, 2012 at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Larry Scott Mullens officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. Charlie was born November 7, 1942, in Dickson, WV, a son of the late Charles B. and Erma E. Craft Newman. A brother James Ermal Newman also preceded him in death. He was a US Army veteran serving during the Vietnam era, and retired from Verizon Communications as an installer and cable splicer. He was an active scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 605 for over 20 years, mentoring 13 scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also active with the Girl Scouts. One of Charlie’s passions was teaching grade school children as well as folks of all ages about the Civil War. He took great pride in his role not only as a teacher but also as a reenactor serving with Chapman’s Battery, Virginia Light Artillery, made up of reenactors from WV, VA and MD, and PA. Survivors include the love of his life, and high school sweetheart, Connie Jo Plummer Newman; two daughters, Tammie Renee’ Hilton of Florida, and Wendie Gail Newman of Kenova; two sons James Richard “Russ” Newman (Wendy) of Kenova, Johnathan Scott Newman of Huntington; Greg Richards (Angie) of Kenova who he thought of as a son; 5 granddaughters, Victoria and her twin sister Amanda Newman, Mariah Bias, Kayle Owens and Breanna Hilton; three adopted grandchildren, Lenzy, Jacob and Isabella Richards; and his family from Chapman’s Battery whom he loved dearly. Battery members will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call from noon to service time Friday, December 21, 2012, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Charlie’s memory to the children’s charity of their choice.
