Betty Jo Carey Hunter
(July 28, 1927 - February 28, 2013)



Betty Jo Carey Hunter, 85, of Huntington, widow of Eddie Mac Hunter, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013, at her residence. She was born July 28, 1927 in Huntington, WV, a daughter of the late Joseph Daniel and Esta Mae Ramey Carey. In addition to her parents, two sisters, Mildred Mae Cox and Dorothy Jean Whitt preceded her in death. Betty Jo graduated in 1945 from Vinson High School, and was retired as an accounting and payroll manager after starting on the floor as a sales clerk at the former Anderson Newcomb Department Store and Stone and Thomas Department Store with 48 years service. She joined the Beta Sigma Phi in April 1960 in Nu Chapter. Betty Jo progressed to Xi Rho, Preceptor Phi, Laureate Phi and lastly Lambda Master. Betty Jo served two consecutive terms as president of Beta Sigma Phi city council, as well as Recording Secretary Treasurer. In 1978-79 she was selected as Miss Beta Sigma Phi for Huntington; she was chairman of two state conventions held in Huntington 1969 and 1975, and served as treasurer of three other conventions held in 1982, 1992, and 1999. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Hunter Nichols and Robert Nichols of Huntington; a brother, Paul Edward Carey of Stockton, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank her special friends at EMS Transport and at Fresenius Dialysis Units. Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 PM Monday, March 4, 2013 at White Chapel Mausoleum, White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, with Pastor Dennis Morrello officiating. Friends may visit the family 4:00-6:00 PM Sunday at Chapman’s Mortuary, with a Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Ritual at 5:00 PM.
