Obituary

James Conrad McAllister, 94, of Huntington, WV, passed away November 10, 2018, in Woodlands Retirement Community. Jim was born October 28, 1924, in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, the son of the late John Edward McAllister and Jenny Finch Lawton McAllister. The family moved to Huntington, WV, while Jim was young, and he attended Miller Elementary, Cammack and Huntington High School from which he was graduated. He also took classes at Marshall University and the University of Michigan. He was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church for many years. His wife, Betty Jane Adams McAllister, preceded him in death in 2005. They had been married for 60 years. Jim served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II. He spent his career working for the Internal Revenue Service, for which he good-naturedly handled jokes from family and friends. He spent most of his career working for the IRS in Parkersburg, WV, and Huntington, WV. The family lived briefly in Logan, WV, and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Jim had a beautiful singing voice and served in the choir at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Parkersburg, WV, where they lived for almost 30 years. A lifetime fan of Marshall University football and basketball, Jim attended games until he was no longer able to. He enjoyed sharing stories of "sneaking" into the games when he was a child of 7 or, if he could not make his way in, standing outside and listening to the announcers. Jim is survived by his daughters, Susan McAllister Sprouse of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Sara McAllister Lowe of Charlotte, NC, and their husbands, Marc Sprouse and Glenn Lowe. He also is survived by his grandchildren Evan Sprouse of Florida, Cara Berkeley of Tennessee, and Brooke Sprouse Propst, as well as her husband Brent Propst of South Carolina. His sister, Anna Jane Withers of Emmaus, PA, and his nephew Brian Withers of South Carolina, and nieces Barbara Withers and Mary Beth Fagan, both of New Jersey, survive Jim. He was very proud of his great-grandchildren Reagan Sprouse, Rylan Sprouse and Noah Propst, who died May 22, 2016. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2018, at Woodlands Retirement Community, Huntington, with Dr. Bill Wilson and Rev. Bill DeMoss officiating. A private burial service will follow. Chapman's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
