Vivian Prater Phares
(April 1, 2010)


Vivian Prater Phares, formerly of Huntington, WV, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2010 at The Gardens of McGregor in East Cleveland, Ohio. Vivian was born in Robson, WV a daughter of the late Eugene Gardner and Oretha Settle Prater. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Faye Prater Campbell, and three brothers, Merlin, Doug and Larry Prater. Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn Phares and Joel Elvery of Cleveland, OH; a sister-in-law, Margaret Prater Hamilton of Upland CA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Before retirement, she was Deputy Compact Administrator for the WV Department of Corrections. She was a graduate of Marshall University and a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church. She was an avid bridge player and an active volunteer in many organizations including the League of Women Voters, the Cabell County Democratic Women's Club, Church Women United, Christian Associates, the YWCA and the Cridlin Food and Clothing Pantry. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, with Rev. Carol McKay officiating. Friends may call from noon until 1:00 PM Tuesday at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington. The procession will leave Chapman's at 1:00 PM.
