Obituary
Paul David Ratcliff, 72, of Ft. Gay, WV, died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 5, 2018 in Huntington, WV. David was born on July 13, 1945 in Huntington, WV to the late Glenn and Thelma Ratcliff. He attended Ft. Gay High School. He began his employment with the railroad but left to join the Army to serve in the Vietnam War in 1965 and 1966. After he came back from Vietnam he returned to his employment with the railroad. He continued with his public service as Police Chief of the town of Ft. Gay and later retired as a Federal Police Officer from the General Service Administration. After retirement he served the community and veterans, giving his time to many to ensure they received any assistance they might need. He was an active member of the VFW Post 1064 in Huntington, WV; a life member of VFW Post 9738; an active member of the Fort Gay Vietnam Veterans Association; American Legion Post 93, Kenova; DAV Chapter 2 of Huntington; and Vietnam Veterans of America Tristate Chapter #949. He was a Master Mason of the O'Brien Lodge No. 101 in Williamson, WV and a member of El Hasa Shriners. He was a member of the former Beverly Hills Baptist Church and attended Fort Gay Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death, by three brothers Charles Ratcliff of Ft. Gay, WV, John Ratcliff of Carroll, OH; and Billy Ratcliff of Ft. Gay, WV; one sister Wanda Johnson of Columbus, OH and a granddaughter, Elyse Ratcliff of Ashland, KY. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Johannah Fugitt Ratcliff, two sons Paul David (Lisa) Ratcliff, Jr. of Bluefield, WV and Ricky (Debra) Ratcliff of Ashland, KY, and one daughter Sheri Campbell of Ft. Gay, WV. He is also survived by two sisters, Carol Proctor of Cannelton, WV and Judy (Gene) Morrissey of Columbus, OH. David had seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren whom he adored and dearly loved. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. David's constant canine companion Abby was his pride and joy. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Thursday, March 8, 2018, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Rev. Tim Preston officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by American Legion Post 93. Visitation for family and friends will be from noon until 2:00 pm Thursday of the funeral home. David touched many people during his life with his kindness and good humor. He had many friends and relatives who loved him and will miss him terribly. His impact on their lives will never be forgotten.
