She was born March 20, 1941, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Clyde and Lorena Hicks White, and was a loving free spirit. Sue was an Art teacher in the Cabell County school systems for 30 years, having taught at Salt Rock Elementary and Jr. High Schools. She was a member of the former Otterbien UMC and Community of Grace Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, and was chairman of the Prison Ministry Outreach. Sue is survived by her husband of 52 years, John A. VanMatre; a son Joey VanMatre; daughter, Becka VanMatre (Farrah); 4 grandchildren, Bri VanMatre, Tori VanMatre, Caleb VanMatre, and Baylee Saunders. She also is survived by her sister, Judy Williams (Bob), and a special sister-in-law, Linda VanMatre (Martin); two nieces, Robin Williams, and Karen Dolk (Ryan), and a very special friend Ethel Venturino-Moore. Sue also wanted to include Rev. Neil Irons, the pastor who married her and John. She leaves behind the legacy of her art work, and her love and devotion to God. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Community of Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Steven B. Hamrick officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the church.
