Obituary

Charles Irving Jones, PhD.
(April 18, 1922 - October 19, 2011)

Charles I. Jones went to sing in the Heavenly choir on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, having lost a battle with heart failure while at St. Mary’s Medical Center at Huntington, WV. Known by many names including “Doc Charlie”, C.I., Irving, Uncle Irb, Dad, and Papa, Charlie was born in rural North Carolina, the son of Donnie Hue Jones and Odessa Batten Jones on April 18, 1922. A man of great faith, Charlie was a member of Nahunta Friends Quaker Meeting in Nahunta, NC. For many years he attended Highlawn United Methodist Church and most recently First Presbyterian Church. He served in the Navy in WWII and graduated from N.C. State University and Florida State University. Charlie had a long and distinguished career as an educator. His last professional endeavor was the establishment of the Occupational, Adult and Safety Education Department at Marshall University where he taught and served as chair from 1969 – 1987. Everyone who knew Charlie was blessed, and he always had a song to greet them. His brothers, Dr. Donnie Hue Jones, Jr. and Calvin Truett Jones, preceded him in death. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends including his sweetheart and wife of 65 years, Ruth Braswell Jones; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Susanne Braswell; his children, Chuck and Gaytha Jones, Cathy Jones and Kathryn Childers, Sarah and Dan Stone; his grandchildren, Joy and Chris Brown, Chad and Megan Jones, Betsy and Mike Hager, Suzanne Forsythe, James, John and Hannah Stone; and his great-grandchildren Lily, Elise, Joe and Jack Hager; Hope Brown; and Audrey Jones. As Charlie would say, “What’s done is done.” A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 3:00 pm Sunday, October 23, 2011 at community of Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Overstreet and Pastor Keith Leap officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to service time Sunday at the church. Instead of flowers, contributions can be made to Nahunta Friends Meeting, 2537 NC 581 N. Pikeville, NC 27863.
