Cabell County
Doors to the Past

Obituary

Alva Joe Combs was preceded in death by his father William Richmond Combs and mother Matilda Combs (Howard). Joe at age 86, a lifetime resident of Cabell County, WV, died at St. Mary's Medical Center on 30 Sept 2017 from a massive heart failure. Joe was a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother, celebrated uncle, and an attentive grandfather. He possessed a keen sense of fairness and sharing with others in both material things and just good common sense advice. Joe worked at INCO in Huntington, WV for 30 plus years mainly in the cold draw department and had numerous occupations throughout the plant including working in the die and tool shop. There were numerous part time business ventures over the years including but not limited to water well drilling service and agricultural produce production. Joe had a talent for poetry as well as song lyrics, one of which was incorporated into a children story sing along. Joe also had an uncanny ability to repair machinery with focused persistence. He was also preceded in death by his brother William and younger sister Margaret. He is survived by family of wife, Grace P. Combs; son, Jonathan T. Combs; son, Joseph E. Combs; daughter, Jennifer K. Calloway; son, Roger J. Combs; five sisters, Betty, Alberta, Ethel, Evelyn, and Patricia; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday, 4 Oct 2017, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Reverend Roger Mooney officiating. Burial will occur afterward at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
