Obituary

Ted E. (Teddy) Hazelett, 89, died unexpectedly on September 18, 2017, in Newark, Oh with his loving wife, Phyllis, at his side. Born September 4, 1928 in Huntington, WV, he was the youngest son of the late Roscoe Spencer and Zora Patricia (Godby) Hazelett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph Vernon and Charles Cameron Hazelett. Growing up in Lincoln County, near Midkiff, WV, he graduated from Guyan Valley High School, near Branchland in 1946, where he was very active in all sports. Following High School, Ted entered the United States Air Force and spent four years active duty with duty assignments to Ft. Francis E. Warren, Cheyenne, WY, Great Falls AFB Montana and 2 ½ years in Japan and Korea, where he earned several commendations and was elected to the Far East Sports Hall of Fame for participation in Baseball, Softball, Basketball, and Golf. After being Honorably Discharged from the Air Force, Ted began working at Ashland Oil and Refining Company while attending college at Marshall where he graduated in 1957 with a BBA Degree in Accounting and a minor in Economics. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After several years at Ashland Oil, Ted accepted a position as Accountant with the United States Air Force as a Civilian. He worked for the Air Force as a Civilian for approximately 27 years with duty stations at Newark AFB, Ohio; Albrook AFB, Canal Zone, in the Republic of Panama. He was then offered a job as Systems Accountant at the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center, Denver, CO where he remained until the offer as Chief Accountant, Ramstein AFB, Germany was too good to turn down. After completing his tour at Ramstein AFB, Germany, Ted returned to the AF Accounting and Finance center as a Supervisory System Accountant and subsequently the Chief Accountant at Lowry AFB, Aurora, CO where he remained until the desire to return to Newark, OH to spend more time with his family before retirement was overwhelming. His family had remained in Newark. Ted is a member of Post 85 of the Newark, OH American Legion. During his year as an entry level accountant, Ted took up flying and became a licensed Private Pilot and logged over 1,000 hours in single engine aircraft. He and his wife were then able to make many golf junkets throughout Ohio, WV, Indiana, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. Life has been good. Survivors include: his loving wife of 59 years, Phyllis R. (Reynolds Martin) Hazelett who he married on May 30. 1958; son Danny K. Martin, Granddaughter Diane Watson (Todd) and great granddaughters, Brittney Lynn Watson and Courtney Dawn (Jonathan) Wade, all of Newark, OH. He was blessed with the birth of great great granddaughter Nora Mae Miltimore on September 16, 2014. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and special love for his niece Patsy. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Sunday, September 24, 2017, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Huntington, with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans Honor Guard Post 16.
