Rev. Asa Nelson
(August 25, 1920 - May 10, 2011)



Rev. Asa Nelson, 90, of Huntington, WV, widower Reta Nelson, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Friday, May 13, 2011, at Lick Creek Baptist Church, Wayne, WV, with Rev. Lester McMahan and Rev. Mike Dillon officiating. Burial will be in Crook Cemetery, Huntington. He was born August 25, 1920 in Wayne County, WV, a son of the late Charlie and Willa Lee Lawson Nelson. Others preceding him in death were two sisters, Myrtle Ramey and Virginia Rowe; and a granddaughter, Johnna Skeens. Asa was a steel forger for Mondie Forge, after moving to the Cleveland area in 1969. Before moving to Cleveland he was a member of Booten Millers Fork United Baptist Church, and while in Cleveland he belonged to Trinity Freewill Baptist Church, serving as both assistant pastor and pastor, and also was a member of Unity Freewill Baptist Church. Also while in Cleveland he served as a hospital Chaplin at St. Vincent Charity Hospital. He moved back to the Huntington area in 1987 and became a member of Lick Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Frank Keesee of Huntington, Alice and Jerry Sawyers of Cleveland, Cindy and Ralph Adkins of Sheffield Lake, OH, and Rhonda and Eddie Ferris of Huntington; Two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Sabine Nelson of Huntington and Charlie and Kathy Nelson of Celveland; 15 grandchildren, Keith, Katie, Keith , Kevin, Tina, Jennifer, David, Brian, Rachel, Rebecca, Chanda, Scott, Stacey, Jason, and Anna; 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; a sister, Violet Egnor of Lavalette; and a brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Genevieve Adkins also of Lavalette. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, May 12, 2011, at Chapman’s Mortuary, and after 10:00 AM Friday at Lick Creek Baptist Church.
