Obituary

Iris Jean Bias Roe of Huntington, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, went home to be with her Lord on February 21, 2018. Iris, oldest child of Bernie and Lovie (Cook) Bias, was born April 11, 1930, in Cabell County, WV. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Calvin Ted Roe, son, Gregory Scott Roe, infant sister, Stella Louie Bias, brothers William (Leona Adkins) Bias and Douglas Bias, sisters-in-law Geraldine (Hiram) Roe Jackson, Glenna (Bobby) Roe Cook, Anna Lee (Denvil) Roe Eagle, Charlotte (John) Roe Rowsey, Patricia (Ronnie) Roe Miller, brothers-in-law, Tilden Thompson, Carlos Roe, Wilford "Shot" (Dorma Graham) Roe, Albert Ramey and Don Kyle; daughters-in-law, Terri Chadwick Crisel Roe and Melinda Conrad Roe, beloved maternal grandparents William and Louie (Lucas) Cook, special aunt, Norma Cook Dillon, special cousin Helen Cook Cottle Summerville and special niece, Brenda Kay Lester Lucas.  Iris is survived by her son, Roger Roe, daughter, Diana (Robert) Roe Bowen, grandson, Michael Bowen (Allison Broome), grandson, Jonathon (Christina Ball) Roe, granddaughter, Sabrina (Gregory) Bowen Salmons Queen, step-granddaughter Angela (Joey) Crisel Trader, great grandsons, Benjamen Bowen and his mother, Amanda (Fulks) Bowen, Jayson Salmons and Oliver Queen, great granddaughters Evelyn Salmons and Abigail Roe, step great granddaughter Hallie Trader and step great grandsons Jonas Trader and Brayden Queen. In addition, she is survived by her siblings, Floe Bias Thompson and Wayne (Barbara Adkins) Bias; , sisters-in-law, Pauline Adkins Bias, Hope Roe Ramey Kyle, Jackie (Basil) Roe Asbury and Linda (Ken) Roe Martucci.  As a young woman, Iris was employed by Bailey's 5and10. She was later employed by the Sylvania Electric Products, Inc., in Huntington where she was one of their quality inspectors, a position practically unheard of for a woman in those days. She remained employed there until her marriage in 1957. After her marriage, she began her career of wife, mother, homemaker and volunteer. She was active in her children's and grandchildren's activities and was a leader for the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts as well as 4H for many years, teaching many young people not only sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidery but also camping skills and life lessons. She was a homeroom mother at Hite Saunders for her children as well as her grandchildren and was also active in the Parent/Teachers Association at that location. Her home was a gathering place for the neighborhood children and some of them nicknamed her "Doc" Roe because of all the cuts and scratches she patched up. She enjoyed quilting and belonged to the Creative Quilters Club for many years. Iris attended Barboursville High School and, although she didn't graduate, she made learning a lifetime event. She truly led by example and always enjoyed sharing her knowledge with others of any age.  She gave her life to God in 1979 and loved sharing His goodness with everyone. She witnessed to everyone, including telemarketers and strangers on the street! She was a member of Camp Creek FWB Chapel for thirty eight years and was active in the church's activities until recent years. Mom was an outgoing person; her children were convinced she knew everyone in town as she talked with everyone-not just a simple greeting but actual conversations. She could find something in common with anyone. She enjoyed her family and loved ones and was always ready with words of encouragement or gentle guidance and never allowed you to leave after a visit or hang up the phone without telling you she loved you.  The family would like to thank the staff at St. Mary's Medical Center, Heartland of Riverview and the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House for the care they gave to her. You'll never know how much we appreciate your care.  Her son, son-in-law, grandsons, grandson-in-law and nephew, Jerry Eagle, will serve as pallbearers. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, by nephew, Brother Brian Cardwell. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. Burial will be in Bowen Cemetery, Huntington, WV.
