Alex Jerome Jenkins
(December 12, 1921 - December 15, 2011)


Alex Jerome Jenkins, 90, of Huntington, WV, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2011, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington. He was born December 12, 1921 in Ravensford, NC a son of the late John Alexander and Rhoda Huskey Jenkins. He was a retired sanitarian for the Cabell Huntington Health Department with 33 years of service and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, where he participated in the assault and capture of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands in February of 1945. He was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Honorable Service lapel button and the Good Conduct Medal and was proud to be a paratrooper for the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a 1949 graduate of Marshall College and was a life member of the Marine Corps League; life member and former Commander of DAV Chapter 2 of Huntington; and a life member of VFW Post 9738, whose members will conduct military graveside rites. Survivors include: his wife of 65 years, Jewel Maxine McComas Jenkins; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Jenkins Clagg and Tim Clagg of Alpharetta, GA, Pamela Jenkins Diaz and Julio Diaz of Tulsa, OK, and Paula Jenkins Holley and Terry Holley, of Huntington; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Nancy Jenkins of Naperville, IL; nine grandchildren, Bethany Clagg Leftwich, Karen Clagg Grizzard, Jeffrey Clagg, Diana Diaz, Adriana Diaz, Carlos Diaz, David Jenkins, Kyle Jenkins, and Katie Poti; and seven great grandchildren, Sarah, Julia, and Anna Leftwich, Colin and Emily Grizzard, Rex Smith, and Alden Poti. A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 PM Monday, December 19, 2011, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with Rev. Terry Holley officiating. Inurnment will be in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Monday at Chapman’s Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Alex’s name to Baptist Temple (902-21st. Street, Huntington, WV 25703), Hospice of Huntington (P.O. Box 464, Huntington, WV 25709) or the charity of your choice.
