Obituary
Ruth C.
Jordan
(May 22, 1923 - January 7, 2011)
Ruth C. Jordan, 87, passed away
peacefully January 7, 2011 at her home in Logan, Utah. She was born in Crown
City, Ohio on May 22, 1923, the first child of Arlie Lillian Sims Collins
and Millard F. (Bill) Collins. She was petite from the start but her spirit
was strong. As her family grew and her mother took a job as an LPN during
the depression, Ruth, at age 12, became the chief caretaker for her three
siblings: Agnes Deaton (deceased), Leslie Collins (deceased) and Elsie
Linville (deceased).
In May, 1941 Ruth was a member of the first graduating class of Huntington
East High School. While there she met Harold William Jordan. They married in
July of 1942 and were together for 68 years. She is survived by her husband,
Harold; 3 children, Bill Jordan (Judy Robertson), Sue Jordan McWhorter
(James) and Mike Jordan (Lucy Adkins); five grandchildren: Amanda Austin
(Kelsey), Sarah McCallister (Davey), Michelle Morgan (Brandon), Robert
McWhorter (Vita), and Brook McWhorter (Catherine); and three great
grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Morgan, Jordan McWhorter, and Luke Austin.
During the years when her children were growing up, Ruth was well known for
cooking fabulous meals for large groups and always having plenty when extra
folks showed up to join them.
Ruth was a longtime member of First Guyandotte Baptist Church where she held
many jobs. She was church secretary for many years and taught Sunday School
until she was 80 years old. Her testimony for Christ was strong and she was
loved by many. She always visited shut-ins and people who were ill, cheering
them with her sweet smile and kind words. One of her favorite activities was
crocheting and many church members received baby blankets made by her hands.
She won awards for her sewing abilities for dressing dolls for the Salvation
Army Christmas drive. Ruth also made many of Sue's dresses with matching
outfits for her dolls. Starting at the age of 68, Ruth made quilts for all
her children and grandchildren before her memory slipped and she was unable
to follow the patterns.
For 25 years Ruth and Harold ran Jordan Services, an office repair company
in Huntington. She was the office manager and they spent every day side by
side. After retiring, they began to travel to Ninth Infantry reunions to
catch up with Harold's former Army cohorts. Ruth was Ladies Auxiliary
chaplain and always made items to auction for the support of disabled
military personnel.
As Ruth's health declined and her dementia increased, she began to receive
home health care from Access Home Health and Hospice. During the last two
years of her life, those young CNAs and the nursing staff became part of the
Jordan family. They took wonderful care of Ruth right to the end and they
grew to love her very much. Our thanks to all of you.
Ruth is returning to Huntington, WV for her funeral and burial. The viewing
will be held Thursday, January 13th from 6-8 PM and the Memorial service
will be January 14th at 2:00 PM. Both will be held at Chapman's Mortuary in
Huntington.
An open house and celebration of her life will also be held in Logan, Utah
at Williamsburg Retirement Community on February 7, 2011 from 6-8 PM.
