Nichols
(January 11, 1924 - January 23, 2011)
Elizabeth "Betty" Arrington Nichols,
87, of Huntington, WV passed away on January 23, 2011, at Woodlands
Retirement Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born
January 11, 1924 to the late Ted and Arravelva Arrington in Maysville, KY.
Betty retired after a long career as an educator and journalist. Elizabeth
"Betty" Arrington She was a former editor of the Marshall University
Parthenon. One of her reporters was the late Soupy Sales. She was a former
editor at the Herald-Dispatch. Betty began her teaching career at Vinson
High School. Then she became a teacher of journalism and English for 32
years at Huntington High School where she published the school newspaper The
Tatler. She then served as Supervisor of Language Arts for Cabell County
Schools following her long and successful career as a teacher. She was also
a clinical professor of Journalism at Marshall University. Betty was the
1984 Cabell County Teacher of the Year and elected to the Marshall
University School of Journalism Hall of Fame. Betty had many students who
went on to successful local and national journalism careers. In her "spare
time", Betty edited numerous books for professional writers and wrote
sections for national standardized tests such as the SAT.
Betty served in varied positions of leadership in numerous community and
professional organizations including being president of many such as the
Cabell County Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW, the Huntington
Woman's Club, and Panhellenic. She taught Sunday School and served in many
leadership positions at First United Methodist Church of Huntington for many
years.
Betty was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jack Edward
Nichols, Sr., and her brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Colleen Arrington.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jack and Sue Nichols of
Barboursville; a granddaughter, Heather Nichols Rosenfeld (Mike) of Los
Angeles, CA; a niece, Martha Martin (Danny); a great niece, Beth Walters;
and a nephew, Teddy Arrington all of Chesapeake, OH. Special life-long
friends are Dr. Bernard Queen and the late Lamina Queen. The family wishes
to thank all of the staff of First Floor East Alzheimer's Unit at Woodlands
for their loving and compassionate care of Betty.
There will be a brief memorial service at Ridgelawn Cemetery Mausoleum at
2:30 on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. Family will receive friends beginning at
2:00 at the mausoleum prior to the service. Chapman's Mortuary of Huntington
is assisting with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
donations to the American Cancer Society.
