Obituary
Ella Mae Perry Finley Poindexter, 76, of Huntington, WV, entered heaven on May 3, 2018. She was born at home in Beech Fork, WV, on October 28, 1941. Ella was blessed to be born into, and to always be an integral part of, a large and loving family. The hard-working generosity and support of her parents and siblings made it possible for her to be the first person in her family to attend and graduate from college. Ella deeply cherished this opportunity and saw the love of her family as a gift to be passed on to others. Ella was a proud graduate of Wayne High School and Marshall University where she earned her undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Medical Laboratory Technology and a graduate degree in Hospital Administration. Early in her career she worked as a medical technologist at City of Hope Hospital in Duarte, CA and at Methodist Hospital in Baldwin Park, CA. When Ella returned to West Virginia she worked briefly at several area hospitals before she began working at the Veterans Administration Medical Center where she served as the Chief Medical Technologist and Laboratory Supervisor for many years until her retirement. In her role at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Ella also supervised and taught medical technology students from the University of Rio Grande in Ohio. Another role she enjoyed was serving as a resource for the Marshall University medical students as they completed their Pathology studies and rotation. She was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church and a resident of Woodlands Retirement Community. As a person, sister, and friend, Ella was always warm and understanding. She brought blue skies and sunshine everywhere she went. She dearly treasured the fellowship of shared laughter and home-cooked meals with family and friends. Her perpetually positive outlook, strength, and resiliency helped her turn set backs into stepping stones and she often counseled and inspired others to do the same. As a spouse and a mother Ella was a steadfast and patient anchor. As a grandmother she was an enthusiastic supporter of dreams and an ardent spoiler. In every aspect of Ella's life, Jesus Christ's call to "love one another" was her constant mission and it is her legacy. Ella was preceded to heaven by her parents Alvin and Ona Perry and by her brother Eugene Perry. She is survived by her husband Harold Poindexter, son Gary Poindexter and daughter-in-law Susie, daughter Allyson Finley Ey and son-in-law Christopher, and her grandchildren Emily Poindexter, Josh Poindexter, and Wilson Ey. Ella's Surviving siblings are her devoted sister Erna Bloss Lett, and her caring brothers Eldreth Perry, Eldon Perry, Douglas Perry, and Noah Perry. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. Heartfelt gratitude is extended to Ella's beloved physician, Dr. Dewayne Tackett, her chronic care nurse, Jennifer Casey, and to all the dedicated, compassionate staff at St. Mary's Medical Center for their exceptional care. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service which will be held at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at 10:00 AM.
