ObituaryFrederick Horne Cassels, 69, of Huntington, West Virginia, and formerly of Atlanta, Georgia passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2018 by natural causes at his residence. Born in Atlanta, Georgia at Crawford Long Hospital on September 17, 1949, he was the third child of Robert Quarterman Cassels and Donata Horne Cassels. He attended Fernbank Elementary School, Druid Hills High School, and Georgia Military Academy. At Fernbank he was president of the 4-H Club. At G.M.A. he made Honor Roll, was a member of the French Club, and was on the wrestling team. Fred was a member of the Emory Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. In November 1967 Fred joined the Marines and fought in the Vietnam War. During his years in service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. Fred also served in the Philippines and Iceland. After his years in the service Fred travelled extensively throughout the United States. He lived in Midtown Atlanta, Los Angeles and many other places where he met interesting people who remained his friends throughout his life. Fred was a kind and free-spirited man who was strongly religious. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed conversation about genealogy, philosophy and religion. He also loved listening to music, food of all varieties, walking and biking. Fred was talented in all sports especially track, football, and baseball. He loved to camp outdoors "under the stars" as he would say. Fred's paternal ancestors include Puritans who settled Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1630 where their descendants then settled in Midway, Georgia, Liberty County in 1752. Some of whom left Massachusetts in the late 1600's due to the Salem Witch Trials. Many of his Midway ancestors are included in the book, The Children of Pride which is described as a non-fiction version of "Gone with the Wind". Fred's maternal ancestors settled many parts of Long Island, New York in the early 1600's where some bought lands directly from Native Americans. Fred is a seventh generation Georgian whose grandfather, Louie Jones Cassels, was born in Atlanta on West Peachtree Street in 1874. Both of Fred's grandfathers were highly respected businessmen in Atlanta's infancy. Fred will be greatly missed by his family and all the many people he touched. Survivors include his mother, Donata Horne Cassels, his siblings, Donata Cassels Collier, William Louie Cassels, Robert Horne Cassels and his partner Tom Beck, and Julianne Cassels Craig and her husband Jonathan Craig; 4 nieces and nephews, Donata Monnin, Melanie Barford, Ian Craig, and Alexander Craig, 6 great-nieces and nephews, Ellery Monnin, Emory Barford, Anna Barford, Ingrid Monnin, John Monnin and Neka Barford, and first cousins Shirley Hoskins, Lynda Kincaid, and Harry Whitehead. He is the son of the late Robert Quarterman Cassels and the brother of his deceased sister, Caroline Cassels, brother-in-law of the late John Collier and the great-uncle of the late Daniel Barford. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
