Obituary



Mary (Marietta) Christian Preston, 87, of Huntington, WV, was received by her Lord and Savior after passing away on Thursday December 13, 2018 in Beckley, WV. Mrs. Preston's funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, December 17, 2018 at Chapman's Mortuary Huntington with Pastor Hamlet Don Smith, Pastor Jerry Matt and Pastor Keith Wiebe Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Cyrus Cemetery, Big Sandy River Road, Prichard, WV. Mary was born March 17, 1931 in Wayne County, WV, a daughter of the late Edward McKinley and Laura Elizabeth Scarberry Christian. She was the central pillar in her family, well-known for being energetically loving and supportive. She was a gifted seamstress and quilt maker and shared her talents with Grace Christian School and Grace Gospel Church, where she was a member. She made costumes for school and church plays, cheered for her grandchildren's teams, and gave generously of her time and talent to ministries serving the young and old. Mrs. Preston traveled overseas to visit and help missionaries in Africa and Puerto Rico. She was also a member of the Wayne County Homemakers. Mary loved to work puzzles and play every kind of game. She was known as "Granny" to so many, both inside and outside of her family. She is deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward "Edd" Preston, three sisters, Minnie Staley, Charlotte Maynard and Helen Norgard, two brothers, Raymond and Euel Kenneth Christian, Edd's siblings who she loved like her own: June, Penny, Mae, David, her son-in-law, Brian Simpson, and great granddaughter, Virginia Joy Preston. Survivors include five children, Barbara (Hamlet Don) Smith of Crab Orchard, WV, Yvonne (Virgil) Newman, Connie (Jeff) Benson, Randy E. (Barbie) Preston, and Martina Simpson, all of Huntington; four sisters, Thelma (Dick) Preston of Prichard, WV, Reva Freeman of Proctorville, OH, Sue (Gary) Kremski of Bradenton, FL and Betty Morris of Columbus, OH; one brother, Cay Christian of Proctor, MN; nine of Edd's siblings Richard Preston, Betty Ward, Janet Bailey, and Jack Preston of Prichard, WV, Joe Preston of Kenova, WV, Sally Dishun of Herndon, VA, Sandy Moorehead of Akron, OH, Steve Preston of Manteca, CA and Betsy Guillett of Saint Pierre WI; eighteen grandchildren, fourty-three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren: Hamlet (Gina) Smith and Noah, Morgan, Zeke, Lauren, Nate, Allison, Cara, Joel, and Eden. Will (Arlene) Smith and Wilson, Matthew, Andrew, Aaron, Jennifer, and Steven. Sam (Gina) Smith and Anne, Josiah, Micah, and Norah. Josiah (Jessi) Smith and Elijah, Maria, Ezra, and Evie. Rebecca (Andrew) Mackay and Luke and Grace. Alex (Anne) Beuhring and Mason (Bethany) and great great grands: Judah and Gideon. Kevin and EllaAnne. Cindy (Mike) Booton and Micayla. JenaRae (Mark) Judd and Simeon, Abbi, Abe and Elli. Laura (Jon) Armstrong and Blair. Jeremiah (Sara Pe) Benson. Scott (Eleilia) Preston and Megan, Michael, and Annabell. Nick (Pam) Preston and Miranda, Kaylee Jo, and Olivia. Matthew Preston and Cooper and Riley. Jonathan, Emily, Catey, Jami and Amanda Simpson. The family requests no flowers because of allergies and donations may be made to the Missionary Fund at Grace Gospel Church 1111 Adams Avenue, Huntington, WV 25704. Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday, December 16, 2018, at Chapman's Mortuary.
